The Women in Maritime Association (WIMA) Fiji recently celebrated the contributions of women in the maritime industry during International Women in Maritime Week at the Tanoa Plaza in Suva. The event gathered professionals from various sectors to recognize achievements, share experiences, and advocate for greater inclusion and support for women pursuing maritime careers.

WIMA Fiji President Jane Koi emphasized the significance of networking as a means to increase visibility for women in this traditionally male-dominated industry. She expressed her joy at the strong turnout and highlighted the importance of ongoing momentum to build capacity and raise awareness of the diverse careers available within Fiji’s maritime sector.

Despite the evident advancements, Koi also addressed the persistent challenges that women face in the industry, including insufficient data collection, limited funding, and a lack of representation in decision-making roles. She advocated for the establishment of a census to enhance understanding of women’s current positions in the workforce and stressed the need for financial support to facilitate the organization’s programs.

The outreach and empowerment efforts undertaken during International Women in Maritime Week resonate with broader trends reflected in similar initiatives across Fiji. For instance, efforts highlight the increasing representation of women in leadership roles within various sectors, including finance and small businesses. There is a clear recognition that when women thrive, communities and economies benefit significantly.

As conversations around gender equality gain traction in Fiji, WIMA’s commitment to supporting women aligns with the goals of various programs and conferences that advocate for mentorship, networking, and teamwork among women. These collective efforts aim to foster a nurturing environment for women, ensuring their contributions are recognized and valued in the maritime industry as well as other fields.

The future looks promising for women’s empowerment in Fiji, as ongoing initiatives not only address immediate challenges but also contribute to the construction of an inclusive economy that appreciates the vital roles women play in all sectors.
