Women Breaking Barriers: The New Faces of Surveying in Fiji

Women are making strides in achieving gender equity in traditionally male-dominated fields, particularly in surveying. Recently, two of the eleven new members who registered with the Fiji Institute of Surveyors are women, demonstrating the ongoing efforts to encourage female participation in this industry. Jitendra Singh, the President of the Institute, emphasizes that this trend reflects the profession’s commitment to ethical practices and inclusivity. He has been actively encouraging women to pursue careers in surveying, reminding them of their capabilities.

Kesaia Dumukoro, one of the newly registered female surveyors, shared her experiences, noting the challenges of her role, which often includes difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions. However, her determination to succeed fuels her perseverance. “I had to carry my own weight and not rely on my male counterparts,” Dumukoro stated, highlighting her resilience and independence in the field.

The Fiji Institute of Surveyors is dedicated to supporting aspiring female surveyors, with hopes that mentorship and growing interest will lead to increased female representation in the years to come. The initiative aligns with other recent efforts within Fiji to promote inclusivity in various sectors.

Previous articles have echoed a similar sentiment regarding the need for more women in the field, emphasizing the importance of skills like AutoCAD and the relevance of outdoor activities in surveying as appealing aspects of the profession. These narratives collectively advocate for greater representation and support a hopeful vision for future generations of women in surveying and related fields.

As initiatives continue to foster a gender-inclusive environment in professions like surveying, there is optimism that more women will join the ranks, contributing their perspectives and skills to a field that is essential for development and infrastructure.
