Women at the Forefront of Northern Division’s Aquaculture Push

The Ministry of Fisheries is making significant strides to enhance aquaculture in the Northern Division by engaging in a week-long initiative aimed at assisting farmers and community groups. This coordinated effort is part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable fish farming, improve food security, and increase community participation in aquaculture development.

The aquaculture team kicked off the week by harvesting over 2,600 tilapia fry from an earthen pond, which were then carefully transferred to a cement tank for further cultivation. Additionally, the team visited the newly constructed pond in Nakanacagi, which is ready for its final outlet piping before it can be stocked with fish.

Women in the Northern Division are taking a proactive role in the fish farming sector. The Driti Women’s Group received nearly 11,000 tilapia fry, which have been distributed across four ponds. This initiative not only promises to bolster income opportunities for the women but also aims to enhance food security in the local community.

In Lagalaga, a farmer named Meli was provided with 5,000 tilapia fry for his large pond, along with three bags of specialized tilapia pellets to support early feeding. This assistance is designed to encourage farmers to cultivate healthy fish stocks and instill confidence in aquaculture as a viable source of livelihood.

These ongoing activities highlight the ministry’s commitment to fostering sustainable aquaculture practices, ultimately aiming to uplift communities in the North. The emphasis on engaging women in the industry also indicates a progressive step towards empowering individuals and promoting economic growth in the region.
