Justice David Ashton-Lewis has expressed commendation for the integrity displayed by witnesses during the ongoing Commission of Inquiry into the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). During a recent media briefing, he noted the positive cooperation from the witnesses, stating that there are “no suspicions of lies” at this point, which bodes well for the inquiry’s credibility.

As some witnesses are participating virtually due to logistical challenges—particularly those unable to travel from New Zealand or Australia—Justice Ashton-Lewis emphasized the commission’s role is to facilitate the process, saying, “Our job is to get their evidence and to do what we can to assist.” This reflects a practical approach to ensuring that all relevant testimony is gathered efficiently.

Senior Barrister Janet Mason also acknowledged that the timeline for submitting the commission’s report would likely need adjustment, given the unforeseen extent of witness testimonies thus far. She stressed the importance of fairness in procedures, ensuring those who might face prejudice from the inquiry have ample opportunity to raise their questions.

The commission is set to hear from former President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere today, which is a notable step in this essential examination of political accountability. The inquiry aims to scrutinize the legality and ethics surrounding Malimali’s appointment, an important matter concerning governance within Fiji’s political landscape.

As these proceedings continue, they represent a significant effort to promote transparency and restore public trust in governmental institutions. This inquiry may herald a shift toward a more accountable governance framework, ultimately ensuring that future public appointments are handled with integrity and adherence to ethical standards. The collective engagement of various political figures underlines a commitment to addressing concerns and fostering a more transparent and accountable political environment in Fiji.
