Attorney-General Graham Leung recently met with Hasan Kleib, the Deputy Director General for the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in Geneva, Switzerland. During their meeting, they explored new avenues for collaboration to further enhance Fiji’s intellectual property framework.

Leung highlighted Fiji’s gratitude for WIPO’s ongoing partnership, particularly noting the impact of the WIPO Asia-Pacific Bureau’s capacity-building programs in the areas of branding and trademarks. He acknowledged the critical technical advice WIPO has provided, which has been instrumental in reviewing and aligning Fiji’s trademark regulations with international standards.

Discussions also included the prospect of a WIPO specialist visiting Fiji to conduct practical training sessions for the Fiji Intellectual Property Office. This initiative aims to improve accuracy and efficiency in both primary and legal examination procedures, which is expected to enhance compliance within Fiji’s intellectual property operations.

The meeting also saw the participation of Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Luke Daunivalu, and First Secretary Shanil Dayal.

This collaboration reflects a positive step towards strengthening Fiji’s intellectual property system, enabling local stakeholders to benefit from enhanced legal frameworks and training. Such efforts ultimately aim to foster a more robust environment for innovation in Fiji.
