William Cross College is making a strong showing at the Suva Zone One Athletics competition held at the HFC Bank Stadium, with around 55 athletes participating. Head coach Mataiasi Dabenaise emphasized the team’s strategic focus on middle-distance events, particularly the 800 and 400 meters, where they feel they have a competitive edge.
Given that many of the athletes are entering competition for the first time, Dabenaise highlighted that gaining exposure is a critical objective leading up to the Fiji Finals. “Our main goal is to get the exposure we need for the Fiji Finals, as most of our athletes are competing for the first time ever. But we’re hoping to collect medals in the middle-distance events,” he explained.
The head coach also expressed his appreciation for the supportive role of parents and the community in providing essential resources for the athletes’ preparations. This communal backing underscores the significance of public involvement in fostering a culture of sports and encouraging youth participation.
The Suva Zone One competition, alongside similar events across Fiji, aims to enhance the competitive spirit amongst young athletes. Fans can catch all the live action on FBC Sports, promoting greater engagement with athletics. This event not only offers a competitive platform but serves as a testament to community support and the overall growth of athletics in the region.
