The Vodafone Fiji Bati camp is taking a cautious approach with Jarryd Hayne’s potential return to play. Head coach Wise Kativerata has yet to finalize the eligibility of several overseas-based players, which has caused a slight delay in announcing the final team.
The Bati squad for the upcoming October-November competition is currently awaiting approvals from the NRL. Kativerata values Hayne’s potential involvement with the team, believing he could be a significant asset.
Discussions have taken place regarding Hayne’s health and mental well-being, given that he has not competed in rugby league for four years. However, Kativerata feels that Hayne’s presence would be a major support for young Fijian players as they prepare for the Pacific Bowl Championship in Suva next month.
Focusing on local talent, particularly in the Vodafone Cup competition, Kativerata has been impressed with the skills and potential of some young players and is considering allowing them the chance to play on an international platform.
“We have discovered some potential in our local players,” Kativerata mentioned. “Last year, we gave opportunities to the Silktail boys, and this year, we aim to concentrate on Vodafone Cup players, as I have been really impressed by some of the youngsters and their individual talents.”
He added, “We have identified one or two players who have caught our attention, and we plan to develop them for the future.”
Kativerata emphasized that they are not rushing Hayne back to play but instead are encouraging him to train and provide guidance to the younger players. He noted that Hayne’s experience and success in the NRL make him an excellent role model for the Fijian team, and his involvement is likely to inspire and motivate them.
The team selection process is contingent on gaining approval from the NRL regarding the eligibility of certain overseas players. Once those approvals are secured, the squad will be announced, potentially featuring promising local talents alongside veterans like Hayne.
The Fiji Bati team for the Pacific Bowl Championship is expected to be named later this week.
