Approximately 60 percent of the Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) membership comprises women, yet a significant gender gap persists in leadership roles within the association’s executive committees. Iva Volavola Powell, an executive committee member, highlighted that in 2022, there were seven women among 39 executive members; however, this number has decreased to three currently.
Volavola emphasized the need for women within the association to take initiative in increasing their visibility in leadership positions. She believes it is essential for women in the education sector to advocate for union issues, stating, “we feel that women issues are union issues too.” The FTA has made strides in supporting female members by enhancing capacity-building initiatives, including entrepreneurship projects such as mobile markets hosted every Saturday. These markets provide a platform for women to come together, discuss important issues, and support each other’s endeavors.
One of the pressing topics the association has been addressing this year is the government’s no-repeat policy in education, perceived as ineffective. Efforts have been made to communicate concerns regarding this policy, and the association is pleased to report that a Bill has recently been passed, reintroducing a retention policy within Fiji’s education system.
This focus on enhancing women’s participation in decision-making echoes the findings of the Fiji Country Gender Assessment 2023, which revealed that women hold only 21 percent of board positions across various sectors. Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has underscored the crucial role women play in driving Fiji’s economic growth. The government’s ongoing commitment to bridging the gender gap in leadership roles promises a future where women’s contributions are fully acknowledged and celebrated.
Moreover, recent surveys indicate a widespread perception among Fijians of the underrepresentation of women in politics, reinforcing the urgency for systemic reforms to enhance women’s roles in both education and governance. These initiatives signal a hopeful trajectory towards a more inclusive and equitable society in Fiji, where women can influence national development alongside their male counterparts. Empowering women in leadership positions is not only vital for gender equality but is essential for the continued prosperity of Fiji.
