“Will a Miracle Save COMO Laucala Island’s Luxurious Hangar in Time?”

Sources indicate that a multi-million-dollar hangar construction project at COMO Laucala Island may require a “miracle” to open within the next two months. Once completed, however, it is expected to boost employment numbers at the island.

The tourism operator’s project in Nadi has faced numerous setbacks, leading to various “Coming Soon” announcements regarding its opening. While the luxury lounge at Nadi International Airport is operational, the hangar was originally anticipated to open by year-end.

The new hangar at Nadi Airport aims to facilitate a smooth transition for guests traveling to and from Kokomo Private Island. According to COMO Laucala Island, international arrivals will be welcomed at the information desk in the arrivals hall and transported directly to the luxury lounge, where amenities like refreshments, entertainment, a family playroom, and shower facilities await long-haul travelers. On departure, guests will also benefit from the luxury lounge while they wait for their connecting flights out of Fiji.

The delay in the hangar’s opening has been linked to issues with a “wrong mix of concrete” on the connecting apron, which had to be removed and redone.

In the project’s timeline, in 2019, the $45 million luxury lounge and hangar facility was announced; in 2022, a stop order halted construction; and in 2023, the stop order was lifted.

Known as a high-end destination, Laucala Island attracts affluent visitors, as highlighted by Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica, who noted last year that delays in the hangar’s development were due to “bottle necks” in the investor landscape. COMO Laucala Island is a private resort in Fiji featuring an airstrip for private jets and 25 luxurious villas, along with three aircraft that have been operational for several years.
