Former Australian football star Luke Wilkshire and his wife Kristina recently arrived in Fiji for the Extra Supermarket Fiji FA Awards Night, which will take place this Sunday at Crown Plaza in Nadi.
Luke expressed his excitement about returning to Fiji after several decades, marking a significant trip as he recalls his last visit as a young boy around the age of seven or eight. This will be Kristina’s first time in Fiji, and both are eagerly anticipating the events of the upcoming days, including the awards ceremony.
An accomplished player with 80 caps for the Socceroos, Wilkshire noted the remarkable growth of football in Fiji and the Oceania region. He mentioned the impact of players like Leroy Jennings, whom he coached and who is now part of Fiji’s national team, showcasing the increasing opportunities for local talent.
Wilkshire encouraged young Fijians to chase their football dreams and foster their passion for the sport. He emphasized, “Fall in love with the game and dream big. Football opens doors to endless possibilities.” Reflecting on his own journey, he shared how the game had taken him around the world.
He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the awards night, stating, “It’s a privilege to see how football is growing in Fiji and to be part of this journey.” The Fiji FA Awards Night will recognize exceptional players, officials, and teams for their significant contributions to Fijian football throughout the year.
The story highlights not only Wilkshire’s return to Fiji but also his desire to inspire the next generation of footballers in the region, promoting a positive outlook on the future of the sport.
