Former Australian football star Luke Wilkshire and his wife Kristina have arrived in Fiji in anticipation of the Extra Supermarket Fiji FA Awards Night, scheduled for this Sunday at the Crowne Plaza in Nadi.
Reflecting on his long-awaited return to Fiji after many years, Wilkshire expressed his excitement about visiting the island nation again. “It feels great to be back. The last time I was here, I was just a little kid, around seven or eight years old. My wife is visiting for the first time, and we’re both looking forward to the coming days and the awards night,” he remarked.
During his visit, Wilkshire acknowledged the significant advancements in football in Fiji and the broader Oceania region. He particularly noted the dedication of players such as Leroy Jennings, whom he coached and who is now a member of Fiji’s national squad.
“It’s great to see the passion for football here. Hopefully, in the coming years, younger generations will continue to be inspired to play and develop their skills,” he stated.
Wilkshire encouraged young Fijians to chase their football aspirations, emphasizing the joy that can come from the sport. “Fall in love with the game and dream big. Football opens doors to endless possibilities. As a kid, I fell in love with the round ball, and it took me all over the world,” he said.
He expressed gratitude for being invited to such a meaningful event, saying, “I’m looking forward to the awards night and celebrating the sport with everyone here. It’s a privilege to see how football is growing in Fiji and to be part of this journey.”
