In an encouraging show of community engagement and environmental consciousness, the Wainiyabia clean-up campaign brought together local youth groups to address littering issues within their community. Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Sakiusa Tubuna, stressed the significance of empowering villagers to change their environmental habits, starting with waste disposal awareness at the grassroots level.

Tubuna highlighted the importance of instilling these values from a young age, particularly beginning at the kindergarten level to foster lifelong habits of cleanliness and environmental stewardship among children. He noted the necessity of initiating these efforts at the village level, emphasizing that a clean country begins with clean communities and homes.

Organized by the collaborative efforts of young residents from Wainiyabia and neighboring settlements such as Bilo, Waidradra, and Kalekana, the campaign was backed financially by World Vision International and coordinated by the Eco Guardians of Fiji. Joanna Caine, CEO of Eco Guardians of Fiji, reinforced the idea among the youth that their responsibilities stretch beyond simply clearing their surroundings. They are, in fact, taking a stand to protect their cultural and natural environments, embodying the spirit of Eco Warriors.

Reflecting similar initiatives across Fiji, including those in Serua and Nayavu Village, this local campaign is part of a broader trend where communities are progressively taking charge of their environmental futures. Past clean-up efforts have reinforced the notion that communal action can effectively engage residents of all ages, cultivating a culture of environmental responsibility and accountability.

Campaigns like these are not only addressing immediate environmental concerns but are embedding a sense of duty and communal pride among younger generations. This instills hope for sustainable practices and a promising outlook for a cleaner Fiji. Through collective participation and empowerment, these initiatives demonstrate that meaningful change is possible and critical for maintaining the idyllic natural beauty of Fiji for future generations.
