As the Commonwealth Games draw nearer, Fiji’s preparations are significantly hindered by challenges related to funding and athlete support, according to FASANOC Chief Executive Officer Vanessa Kilner. She emphasized the critical importance of adequately resourcing athletes to ensure they are well-prepared for international competitions.

Kilner highlighted that preparation encompasses much more than regular training sessions; it entails considerable financial investments in competition exposure, medical care, and overall athlete well-being. She expressed that without sufficient funding, it becomes increasingly difficult to equip athletes with the necessary tools to perform at their peak.

“Our biggest hurdle is funding and providing the proper support for our athletes. At the end of the day, our job is to support the athletes,” Kilner noted. She further elaborated that funding is allocated for various facets of training, which includes not just routine workouts but also participation in pre-Games competitions—an expense that can add up significantly.

Additionally, Kilner stressed that comprehensive athlete support includes vital services such as medical care, health and wellness programs, and nutrition. These elements are essential for enhancing performance and ensuring athletes’ longevity in their sports careers.

From FASANOC’s perspective, funding is categorized into two main areas: logistical funding, which covers airfares, accommodation, and related costs, and funding dedicated to supporting athletes’ overall preparation for the Commonwealth Games.

To address these challenges, FASANOC is actively collaborating with the government, national federations, and other partners to secure the necessary resources. Their goal is to ensure that Fiji’s athletes are fully prepared to compete with pride at the upcoming Commonwealth Games, continuing a tradition of dedication and excellence in sports for the nation.
