Samoa is facing a rise in whooping cough cases, particularly affecting young children. Recent health data indicates that 34 of the confirmed cases, accounting for 68 percent, involve children under one year old. The latest surveillance report shows eight confirmed cases and an additional 46 suspected cases, all of which have been reported from Upolu island. Notably, the cases consist of 56 percent females and 44 percent males.

The Ministry of Health declared a whooping cough epidemic on November 28, highlighting an uptick in cases that began in October, following a period of low activity. Despite the concerning increase, Tagaloa Dr. Robert Thomsen, the island’s deputy director of health, noted that the immunization rate for whooping cough is relatively favorable.

This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of vaccinations and public health measures, especially for vulnerable populations such as infants. With the continuation of health awareness and immunization efforts, there is hope that health authorities can effectively manage and mitigate the spread of whooping cough in Samoa.
