Alarming new data from the Fiji Police Force’s Crime Statistics Unit reveals that youths aged 18 to 24 are the most affected demographic in both suicides and attempted suicides over the past five years. The report, covering the years 2020 to 2024, shows this age group consistently recording the highest number of cases across the country. Notably, the Western Division accounted for 43 percent of all suicide cases and 57 percent of attempted suicide cases, with the Southern Division following and the Central Division reporting the lowest numbers.
The report further highlights a concerning ethnic disparity, noting that Fijians of Indian descent had a higher number of cases compared to iTaukei and other ethnic groups. This pattern aligns with previous statistics showing the Indo-Fijian population exhibiting higher suicide rates, especially among older age groups and males. The national average of suicide is less severe compared to some international figures, but the Indo-Fijian community experiences an alarming rate of 28 per 100,000, significantly higher than the iTaukei rate of 5 per 100,000.
Authorities are deeply concerned about this growing trend among young people and have called for enhanced community support, mental health awareness, and stronger preventive outreach programs. The Fiji Police Force’s Crime Statistics Unit is urging collaboration among families, educators, health workers, and community leaders to address what is being described as a national crisis.
The data paints a picture of a multifaceted issue with suicides often linked to personal relationships and family pressures, while a significant number remain unexplained, underscoring the necessity for more comprehensive research. Additionally, method analysis shows a high incidence of self-harm involving harmful substances, stressing the need for improved control and preventive measures in this area.
In summary, Fiji faces a critical public health challenge amplified by societal pressures and cultural dynamics, particularly affecting the Indo-Fijian community. Addressing these issues requires a coordinated effort that encompasses community involvement, policy development, and a shift towards more proactive mental health strategies to support vulnerable populations effectively.
