A man in his 30s has been apprehended in Nadi for his suspected involvement in a series of sacrilege cases. The Western Division Taskforce carried out the arrest and recovered several religious statues believed to have been stolen. The suspect is currently being questioned as investigations continue.
In a separate incident in Sawani, five juveniles, aged 15 and 17, were interviewed under caution, with their parents present, following allegations of stoning a temple earlier this week. The group reportedly admitted to throwing stones at the temple roof while passing by during the night. The investigation file will be forwarded to the Divisional Crime Officer, who will seek further advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions on potential charges.
Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu emphasized that these cases are not politically motivated. According to him, motives often relate to financial gain, internal disputes within religious communities, or erratic behavior by youths. Such incidents have frequently been seen across Fiji, with authorities addressing a pattern of temple break-ins and statue thefts.
In recent weeks, several religious statues were reported stolen in various locations, including Korociri, Nakurakura, and Sagayam Road. Police have recovered many stolen items and have implemented stronger security measures at affected sites. Communities remain vigilant, pushing for more robust protective measures and fostering interfaith cooperation to safeguard sacred spaces.
Authorities have engaged dedicated taskforces, including Southern Division units and K9 teams, conducting thorough house-to-house inquiries. The police are urging residents to report any suspicious activities and support the ongoing investigations, promoting unity and harmony across diverse faiths. Community leaders are hopeful that these efforts, combined with heightened security measures, can protect places of worship and reassure worshippers across Fiji, reinforcing a shared commitment to peace and mutual respect.
