The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has voiced significant concerns regarding ongoing vandalism and damage to road infrastructure, which has far-reaching implications for the community. These reckless actions undermine connectivity, burden resources, and adversely affect residents across the country.

Recent incidents in Labasa have underscored the gravity of the situation. A fire at the Waidamudamu Bridge on Nakorotari Road temporarily severed access for residents, students, and commuters alike. In response, the FRA swiftly restored the connection by installing a new bridge deck, incurring costs of approximately $130,000.

While police investigations into these acts are ongoing, the FRA remains alarmed at the detrimental impact this vandalism has on essential public services. A separate incident in October 2025 in Batinikama saw the destruction of two heavy machines belonging to an FRA contractor, resulting in a staggering $1 million loss. Such events not only impose heavy financial burdens on contractors but also lead to delays in vital roadwork, creating safety risks and inconveniencing road users further.

The FRA oversees an extensive network comprising 6,371 kilometers of roads and over 1,400 bridges, emphasizing how consistent vandalism necessitates the diversion of funds away from much-needed improvements and maintenance. In certain instances, the damage to equipment and infrastructure has even compelled contractors to withdraw from critical projects entirely.

Additionally, the FRA has reported frequent incidents of damage to road signs, railings, and bus shelters. Despite the Authority’s efforts in conducting regular repairs, the persistent negligence exhibited by a small fraction of the public continues to pose safety risks and lead to unnecessary expenditures.

Addressing these challenges is crucial not only for the safety and convenience of road users but also for maintaining the integrity of Fiji’s road infrastructure. The hope remains that increased public awareness and community engagement will curtail these damaging acts in the future.
