The Government has reaffirmed its support for the kava industry, highlighting its vital role in supporting rural livelihoods and driving economic growth. Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry, Inosi Kuridrani, expressed these sentiments during a stakeholder consultation focused on the proposed Kava Bill and national policy held in Suva.
Minister Kuridrani emphasized the Government’s commitment to revitalizing and enhancing the kava sector through improved road infrastructure, targeted assistance for farmers, and the promotion of sustainable farming practices. He underscored that the proposed Kava Bill aims to protect the interests of growers by addressing unfair trade practices, ensuring farmers benefit first from industry reforms and policies.
Central to the proposed framework is the establishment of a Kava Council, which will play a crucial role in shaping policies designed to shield the industry and foster transparency and fairness throughout the supply chain. This initiative seeks to bolster confidence among stakeholders about the future of the kava market.
During the consultation, various stakeholders raised pertinent questions regarding representation within the council, the integration of new regulations with existing frameworks, and the importance of defining clear processes for grower registration. Participants also highlighted the necessity of adhering to biosecurity and phytosanitary regulations, stressing that any new systems must be streamlined to prevent market access issues and facilitate industry growth.
