Wests Tigers Star Joins Fiji’s Quest for World Cup Glory

Losana Lutu, the talented five-eighth from the Wests Tigers, is among eight players chosen to represent the Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship. This announcement was made by Bulikula head coach Joe Rabele.

Rabele stated, “We went to Australia to scout players and we’ve selected eight.” He highlighted that Lutu, who plays for the Wests Tigers, is a key inclusion.

Lutu, born in Suva and a product of the Campbelltown juniors, has rapidly progressed through the ranks at Wests Tigers. Known for her excellent running skills as a five-eighth, she had a standout 2022 season, contributing to New South Wales’ success in the Under-19s State of Origin and securing her first title with the Wests Tigers in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is contracted with the club until the end of the 2026 season.

Rabele mentioned the importance of selecting the best player combination for the upcoming clash against Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup Women.

“We’ve been monitoring women’s games in the local competitions,” Rabele noted, reflecting on his previous coaching experiences, such as leading the Bati to a semi-final in the 2008 RLWC. He indicated that while several candidates are in the pool of 35 players, final selections will require approval from the National Rugby League for eligibility.

Rabele emphasized that there is significant potential for enhancement within the local competition. “The qualifier is crucial for us,” he affirmed, acknowledging the challenge of reaching the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup and the need to strategize effectively during the qualifiers.

He expressed confidence in his team, stating they are awaiting NRL clearance and that a mix of secondary school players from Lami Steelers will also join the qualifying effort. He mentioned that 50% of the 35-player squad would be local talent.

Reflecting on past shortcomings, Rabele noted that the absence of Fiji Bulikula from the World Cup last year was disappointing. “This year is beneficial as it gives us time to identify our players. The team we form will be a blend of experience and local talent,” he concluded.
