Prominent Wests Tigers five-eighth Losana Lutu is one of eight players selected to represent Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship, as confirmed by Bulikula head coach Joe Rabele over the weekend.
The coach expressed excitement over the selection, stating, “We went to Australia to scout players and we got eight players who we’ve selected,” highlighting Lutu’s inclusion as a standout talent from the Wests Tigers.
Born in Suva, Lutu has advanced rapidly through the Wests Tigers pathways, showcasing her skills as a talented five-eighth with a powerful running game. She had a remarkable 2022 season, contributing to New South Wales’ triumph in the Under-19s State of Origin and securing a title with the Wests Tigers in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is contracted with the club until the end of the 2026 season.
Rabele noted the team’s commitment to selecting the best players for their upcoming clash against Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup Women.
“We’ve been watching the women’s games in the local competition,” said Rabele, who previously coached the Bati to the semi-final of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. He indicated that while he has identified several candidates for the 35-player squad, they must await approval from the National Rugby League concerning players’ eligibility.
He acknowledged the need for improvement in the local competition’s level and stressed the significance of the qualifier: “The qualifier is a very important game for us.”
Rabele emphasized the importance of strategic planning in reaching the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup, stating, “We have a good side but we are just waiting for the clearance from NRL. I’ve included a number of secondary school girls who are playing for Lami Steelers to be part of this qualifier.” He mentioned that half of the squad would consist of local players.
Reflecting on past challenges, Rabele shared his disappointment over the Fiji Bulikula’s absence from last year’s World Cup but expressed optimism about the current situation. “This year is good because it gives us time to identify our players. This team will be strong as it will feature a blend of players,” he concluded.
