Wests Tigers Star Joins Fiji Bulikula for World Cup Qualifier

Prominent Wests Tigers five-eighth Losana Lutu has been selected as one of eight players to represent Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship, as announced by head coach Joe Rabele over the weekend.

Rabele stated, “We went to Australia to scout players, and we have selected eight individuals for our team.” Among those chosen is Lutu, who has made a mark playing for the Wests Tigers.

Born in Suva, Lutu has quickly progressed through the ranks of Wests Tigers after starting in the Campbelltown junior club. Known for her exceptional skills as a five-eighth and her strong running game, she had a standout season in 2022. Lutu played a pivotal role in NSW’s triumph in the Under-19s State of Origin and helped her club secure a title in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is contracted with the Wests Tigers until the end of the 2026 season.

Rabele emphasized the importance of forming the best team possible for the upcoming match against Cook Islands Moana, scheduled for October 26 in Suva. This match will serve as a qualifier for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup Women.

The head coach has been monitoring local women’s competitions, noting, “We’re looking at several players for our squad of 35 but we need to get NRL’s approval regarding their eligibility.” He pointed out the necessity for improvement in the local competitive scene.

“The qualifier is a crucial match for us,” Rabele stated, acknowledging their goal of qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. He mentioned that he plans to include several secondary school players from the Lami Steelers in the mix and that about 50 percent of the squad will consist of homegrown talent.

Rabele also reflected on the previous year’s missed opportunity when Fiji Bulikula was not included in the World Cup, but he is optimistic about this year’s prospects, stating, “This year gives us the chance to identify our players, and the mix we’re forming will be strong.”
