Westpac Launches Pioneering Online Financial Literacy Program for Fijians

Westpac has introduced online financial literacy training, allowing Fijians to participate from their homes or workplaces. This initiative is considered to be the first of its kind in Fiji, expanding upon previous face-to-face sessions with community groups, customers, and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Shane Smith, the Chief Executive of Westpac Fiji, emphasized the bank’s aim to utilize social media’s reach to engage more Fijians. The goal is to encourage individuals to enhance their skills in areas such as budgeting, planning, saving, and overall financial management throughout different life stages.

“We’re proud to be one of the first banks in Fiji to explore virtual training sessions for financial literacy and encourage interested individuals to attend these free sessions,” Mr. Smith said in a statement released by Westpac. He mentioned that participants would receive a certificate and resource materials upon completing the course to assist them in their financial journeys.

Prior to the online launch, Westpac conducted an initial virtual session for its staff, which saw a positive response with over 50 employees in attendance. From October 2023 to July 2024, Westpac has provided free financial literacy training to nearly 6,000 Fijians, offering options such as Financial First Steps for Families and Business Basics.

“This initiative reflects Westpac’s commitment to fostering sustainable business practices and economic growth in Fiji,” the bank stated.
