Westpac Fiji has announced the retirement of Angeline Ram, a remarkable staff member who dedicated 54 years to the bank. Ms. Ram’s journey began in 1969 when she joined the Bank of New South Wales (now Westpac Fiji) as an 18-year-old in the Ledger Department, shortly after graduating from St Joseph’s Secondary School. Throughout her career, she advanced swiftly, taking on senior leadership roles within the bank’s International Banking, Trade Finance, and Foreign Exchange departments.
In 1989, Ms. Ram made history by becoming the first woman to be appointed as the manager of International Operations for the Pacific, marking a significant moment for women in banking within the region. Westpac Fiji’s CEO, Shane Smith, lauded her contributions, stating, “Angie’s dedication, expertise, and leadership have shaped Pacific banking for more than five decades.” He emphasized her reputation for trust and integrity, noting the lasting influence she has had on many leaders she has mentored over the years.
Reflecting on her extensive career, Ms. Ram expressed her gratitude, acknowledging the support she received from both her family and the bank. She highlighted her commitment to excellence and her willingness to challenge the status quo in her work. Now at the age of 72, she feels ready to embark on a new chapter in her life with her husband, with whom she recently celebrated 50 years of marriage. Ms. Ram remarked, “Westpac has not just been the source of my livelihood but has been like an extended family.”
Throughout her career, Ms. Ram has been instrumental in driving major transformation initiatives, enhancing governance frameworks, and leading operational changes, while also serving as a mentor for emerging leaders in the banking sector. Her last day at work was January 22, 2026. Angeline Ram’s contributions to Westpac Fiji and the broader banking community will undoubtedly be remembered and cherished as she steps into retirement, leaving behind a strong legacy for future generations.
