Education grants provided by Westpac Fiji continue to empower girls in their pursuit of academic excellence, as showcased during recent certificate ceremonies in Suva and Lautoka. The Women and Girls Education Grants program has recognized 30 successful recipients nationwide, offering essential financial support to alleviate the costs associated with schooling and further studies.
Westpac Fiji’s Chief Executive Shane Smith highlighted the program’s commitment to fostering long-term impact through education. “Westpac Fiji is proud to support initiatives that create meaningful and lasting change for individuals, families, and communities. This year, I was particularly pleased to see a strong turnout of applications from Fiji’s outer regions, with recipients spanning across the western and tertiary levels.”
Celebrating its 15th year, the program targets female students at all educational levels, from primary to tertiary. Westpac Pacific Managing Director Emma Low emphasized the transformative power of education. “Education is one of the most powerful tools for change. These grants reflect our strong commitment to promoting gender equality, inclusion, and equal access to education for women and girls in Fiji.”
Among the notable recipients this year are sisters Vivian and Taesha Chand from Ba, who both secured grants under the 2025 program. Seventeen-year-old Vivian expressed her gratitude, stating that the support would significantly aid her preparations for university. Her younger sister Taesha described her win as a delightful surprise.
The initiative received over 1,000 applications this year, with grants ranging in value from $500 to $2,500 awarded across three categories. This remarkable response highlights the need for support and the positive impact these grants are making in the lives of young women across Fiji. By investing in education, Westpac Fiji is not only aiding individuals but also contributing to the broader development of communities and promoting a brighter future for girls in the region.
