The Western Division Two team triumphed in a competitive match against the Police Mobile Force, securing a 1-0 victory to claim the 2024 Fiji Police Inter-Formation Soccer Competition Trophy. The final took place yesterday at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.
Throughout the match, neither team was able to score, resulting in a tense stalemate as the game progressed into extra time. The intensity increased as it became clear that the match might conclude in sudden death.
The decisive moment came from Sairusi Nalaubu, who seized an opportunity amidst a moment of distraction among players to score a powerful goal, sealing the victory for the Western side. Nalaubu’s performance throughout the tournament also earned him the Golden Boot award for being the top scorer.
In a post-match interview, team president ASP Riyaz Mohammed expressed his delight and dedicated the victory to the dedicated police officers serving in the Western region. “This is for those hard-working police officers back home who have been sacrificing while we are here playing, and our mission was to get this trophy into the Western Division,” he stated.
The Western Division team lifted the 2024 Inter Formation Trophy and received a $1,000 shopping voucher from sponsor Extra Supermarket. With the tournament now concluded, the team is gearing up for the upcoming 2024 Sukuna Bowl next month, where they will compete against the Army in rugby, soccer, netball, volleyball, and boxing.
