The Divisional Commissioner for the Western Division, Apolosi Lewaqai, reports that efforts are underway to provide food rations to 61 families currently residing in evacuation centers. These distribution efforts are particularly focused in the Nadi area, which includes Andrews Primary School, Saioni Church, Korovuto Secondary School, and the Vou Dance Group Office.

Lewaqai noted that according to established guidelines, food rations are supplied to evacuees 48 hours after their evacuation. Teams are actively preparing food packages for the displaced families, with the goal of completing distribution today. In addition to food distribution, teams are conducting assessments of the situation, specifically monitoring homes and water levels remaining in the area.

While the Western Division currently enjoys clear skies, Lewaqai warned that the Fiji Meteorological Service has forecasted potential rain due to a lingering band of clouds over the region for the coming days. He urged the public to wear protective gear, especially sturdy shoes, when cleaning their homes, and encouraged them to seek guidance from health officials who are on-hand to provide valuable support.

Emergency operations centers will remain functional, as rainfall is expected throughout the weekend. Lewaqai stated that all relevant agencies have been briefed on the initial damage assessment and that the focus will shift toward comprehensive assessments to determine the level of assistance needed by the affected communities.

This focused response showcases the resilience and determination of local authorities to support those in need, highlighting a strong community effort and preparedness in the wake of natural disasters. The emphasis on safety and health precautions demonstrates a well-rounded approach to managing the aftermath of the situation.
