Wesley College’s principal, Dr. Brian Evans, has shared plans to actively recruit standout rugby talent from Fiji during the upcoming Vodafone Deans and Weet-Bix Raluve national competitions. The well-regarded New Zealand institution is committed to uncovering promising Fijian athletes and offering scholarships to those who excel, reinforcing its dedication to nurturing young sports talents.
Dr. Evans is currently in Fiji not only to scout emerging players but also to connect personally with students who meet the school’s criteria and wish to continue their education alongside their rugby careers. This initiative follows a successful period for Wesley College, which recently celebrated its Development team’s victory in the Counties Manukau 1st XV Shield.
To facilitate interested candidates, Dr. Evans has announced two information sessions aimed mainly at students entering Year 11 and Year 12 in 2026. The first meeting is set for August 20 at Tokatoka Hotel in Nadi, followed by a second session on August 24 at Tanoa Plaza Hotel in Suva, the day after the Deans and Raluve finals. Both sessions are scheduled to begin at 6 PM.
Wesley College has a rich rugby heritage, having produced numerous prominent players like Jonah Lomu and Sitiveni Sivivatu, highlighting the caliber of talent the college seeks.
As the Deans quarterfinals approach this weekend, matches will take place at King Charles Park in Nadi and Churchill Park in Lautoka, with game broadcasts available on FBC Sports channels. The anticipation around these competitions underscores the vibrant rugby culture in Fiji and opens doors for aspiring young athletes.
Dr. Evans’ visit and the initiatives at Wesley College reflect ongoing efforts to elevate rugby talent in the region while expanding educational opportunities for students passionate about the sport. This combination of sportsmanship and scholarship offers a hopeful pathway for many young players in Fiji as they seek to carve their futures in both education and athletics.
