Social welfare recipients are receiving crucial support to enhance their self-reliance through targeted income-generation projects. The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection is actively providing the necessary equipment and resources to help individuals establish small businesses.

Minister Sashi Kiran has emphasized that this initiative is designed to decrease long-term dependence on social welfare. She noted the importance of accountability, effective business planning, and sustainability as vital elements for the program’s success.

Recently, a handover ceremony took place, benefiting ten recipients from the Central Division, including those from Nausori, Korovou, Suva, Navua, and Rewa. The event was attended by Acting Commissioner Central Mateo Naiveli and staff from the Social Welfare Nausori Office, highlighting the collaborative efforts behind this initiative.

This support follows the participants’ completion of the Ministry’s Start Your Business training, conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Commerce and Business Development. During the training, participants crafted business plans tailored to their personal skills and the demands of their local markets.

The new businesses launched by the recipients encompass a diverse range of activities, including canteens, kava sales, market vending, jewellery crafting, fish selling, and BBQ ventures. Minister Kiran remarked that the Ministry has provided essential equipment and initial stock to kickstart these enterprises.

Overall, this program not only fosters economic engagement among social welfare recipients but also empowers them to take charge of their futures, creating sustainable pathways for growth and self-sufficiency.
