Miriama Taletawa, honored as the 2023 Sports Woman of the Year in Fiji, is currently facing the dual challenge of excelling in weightlifting while pursuing her university education. At only 19, Taletawa has committed to an intense training regimen, often involving two to three sessions each day, which adds a layer of difficulty to her academic pursuits.
Over the past five years, she has made remarkable advancements in the national weightlifting arena. Notable achievements include securing a bronze medal at the 2023 Oceania Under-23 Junior and Youth Championship held in Samoa, as well as earning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Championship in Suva last year. Her dedicated performance led to her selection for Team Fiji at the forthcoming 2023 Pacific Games.
Taletawa shares that transitioning from high school to university has posed significant challenges, stating, “While I managed to balance both my education and training in high school, it has become much tougher now.” She often prioritizes her academic assignments, highlighting her determination to excel both in her studies and her sport.
