Discussions are underway to potentially introduce weightlifting programs in schools starting next year, according to Della Shaw-Elder, the president of Fiji Weightlifting. She confirmed these talks to a local sports outlet, emphasizing that the initiative is still in its early stages and will begin with pilot schools to ensure safety and effective implementation.
Elder expressed her enthusiasm for integrating weightlifting into the school system. She noted that a proposal for a high-performance center was submitted to the government in 2019, and an email was recently received confirming a location for the center, pending final approval.
The establishment of a weightlifting facility is expected to enhance the sport’s development in Fiji. Currently, the oldest athlete in their group is 26 years old, indicating a promising future for the sport as younger athletes participate.
On a competitive note, Fiji has achieved notable success in recent events, winning youth bronze medals in both the women’s 59kg and men’s 81kg categories. Elder remarked that these results will guide their preparation for the Commonwealth Games in 2026, as they aim to improve their performance against dominant nations like India.
She encouraged the local community to support their athletes and witness the sport of weightlifting firsthand, as Fiji’s weightlifters prepare to compete in additional events in the coming days.
