Discussions are underway to implement weightlifting programs in schools beginning next year, as confirmed by Della Shaw-Elder, president of Fiji Weightlifting, in a statement to SUNsports. She noted that the initiative is in its early stages and will start with pilot schools.
Elder emphasized the importance of careful implementation, considering safety issues related to strength and conditioning. She expressed her enthusiasm for this potential project.
In 2019, Elder mentioned the organization’s request to the government for a proposal to establish a high-performance center, and she recently received an email confirming a location for the center, which is pending final approval.
She remarked that establishing a weightlifting fitness center would elevate the sport’s profile in Fiji. Notably, the oldest athlete competing is 26-year-old Taniela Rainibogi, with the remaining athletes being younger, indicating a promising future for weightlifting in the country.
Fiji has already made notable achievements, winning youth bronze medals in both the women’s 59kg and men’s 81kg categories in recent competitions. Elder stated that these results will help gauge their performance as they prepare for the Commonwealth Games in 2026.
She also commended the efforts of Indo-Fijian athletes for their successes and encouraged the community to learn more about weightlifting. The Fiji weightlifting team is expected to continue competing in upcoming events.
