Weightlifting Fiji has celebrated a remarkable achievement by securing three prestigious awards at the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) 2023 Sports Awards. National coach Henry Elder expressed his pride in the athletes’ dedication and hard work following their impressive performance at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship.
Elder emphasized the importance of support from the government, which has played a crucial role in enabling their success. However, he noted that funding remains a significant challenge for the federation. To compete effectively at the highest level, there is a pressing need for financial assistance to provide athletes with state-of-the-art facilities, advanced equipment, and access to specialists in various fields.
A robust medical support system is also a necessity to ensure the well-being and performance of the athletes. Elder highlighted the potential for uncovering talent in various provinces and expressed gratitude towards the Fiji National Sports Commission for their outreach programs that have helped recruit new athletes.
Looking ahead, Elder remains optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s prospects at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, stating that preparations are already underway and potential medal contenders are being identified. He believes that increasing participation and securing better financial backing are essential for achieving their goals.
Among the award winners, Taniela Rainibogi was named the FSC 2023 Sportsman of the Year, Miriama Taletawa was honored as the Sportswoman of the Year, and Nehemiah Elder received the title of Young Male Athlete of the Year.
This achievement serves as a motivational boost for the team, and with the right resources and continued support, Weightlifting Fiji is poised for further success on the international stage.
