Weightlifting Fiji has recently celebrated a remarkable achievement, clinching three awards at the 2023 Fiji Sports Council (FSC) awards. This recognition highlights the dedication and talent of its athletes and coaches, with national coach Henry Elder expressing pride in their accomplishments.

Elder noted the successful medal haul at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship and shared gratitude toward the athletes for their hard work and commitment. He also acknowledged the crucial support from the government, which played a significant role in making these successes possible.

Despite this achievement, Elder highlighted the ongoing challenges the federation faces, particularly concerning funding. He emphasized the need for financial backing to ensure that athletes have access to optimal training facilities, high-tech equipment, and specialized coaching. Additionally, Elder mentioned the necessity for enhanced medical support to aid athletes’ development.

In an optimistic outlook, he reflected on the federation’s efforts to discover talent across various provinces, thanking the Fiji National Sports Commission for their outreach programs that have helped recruit promising athletes. With an eye on the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Elder is focused on preparations and is already identifying potential medal contenders.

The FSC 2023 awards also celebrated individual talents, with Taniela Rainibogi receiving the Sportsman of the Year award, Miriama Taletawa winning Sportswoman of the Year, and Nehemiah Elder being recognized as the young male athlete of the year.

In summary, Weightlifting Fiji is positioned for a hopeful future, driven by dedication, governmental support, and a commitment to nurturing new talent. Their experiences thus far reflect both their achievements and the challenges ahead, but with continued support, the federation is poised to thrive in upcoming competitions.
