Weightlifting Fiji has celebrated a remarkable achievement by securing three awards at the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) 2023 Sports Awards. National coach Henry Elder expressed pride in the efforts of the athletes, particularly following their impressive performance at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship.

Elder highlighted the dedication and hard work of the lifters, expressing gratitude for the support received from the Government, which he acknowledged as instrumental in their successes. However, he also pointed out that financial support remains a significant challenge for the federation. To compete at the elite level, Elder stressed the need for better facilities, advanced equipment, and expert assistance for both athletes and coaches.

The national coach emphasized the importance of expanding their outreach to discover new talent across various provinces. He commended the Fiji National Sports Commission for their collaborative outreach programs, which have helped in recruiting promising athletes.

Elder remains optimistic about the prospects for Weightlifting Fiji at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2026. Preparation is already underway, with plans to identify potential medalists. He underscored the need for growing participation in the sport and securing more robust financial backing to support these goals.

At the FSC 2023 Sports Awards, Taniela Rainibogi was honored as the Sportsman of the Year, while Miriama Taletawa received the award for Sportswoman of the Year. Additionally, Nehemiah Elder was recognized as the young male athlete of the year.

In summary, Weightlifting Fiji’s achievements serve as a testament to the hard work and talent within the sport, signaling a bright future as they aim for further success on the international stage. With continued support and investment, there is great potential for the sport to thrive and develop even more athletes.
