Weightlifting Fiji recently celebrated a remarkable achievement by securing three prestigious awards at the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) 2023 Sports Awards. National coach Henry Elder expressed pride and gratitude for the outstanding performances of the athletes, as well as their commitment and hard work. He highlighted the significance of government support, which played a crucial role in making these accomplishments possible.

Despite this success, Elder pointed out that financial support remains a significant challenge for the federation. He emphasized the need for better funding to provide athletes with top-tier facilities, advanced equipment, and specialized assistance from experts in various fields. Additionally, he mentioned the necessity of an improved medical support system to ensure athletes’ well-being.

Elder is optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s future, particularly in preparation for the Commonwealth Games in 2026. With initial preparations underway, he aims to identify potential medal winners. He also stressed the importance of increasing participation numbers and enhancing financial backing to promote the growth of the sport.

Among the highlights of the awards ceremony, Taniela Rainibogi was named the Sportsman of the Year, while Miriama Taletawa received the Sportswoman of the Year award. The young male athlete of the year award went to Nehemiah Elder.

This recognition underscores the dedication and talent within Weightlifting Fiji, and with continued support and development, there is great potential for future successes on international platforms.

Overall, Weightlifting Fiji’s journey serves as an inspiration, demonstrating how dedication and teamwork can lead to achievement, despite facing challenges. With the right support and recognition, the future looks promising for these athletes.
