Weightlifting Fiji celebrated a significant achievement this year, garnering three awards at the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) 2023 sports awards. National coach Henry Elder expressed his pride in the athletes’ performances, acknowledging their hard work and dedication, which also shone through in their recent medal success at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship.
Elder highlighted the importance of financial support, which remains a challenge for the federation. He emphasized that to compete at the highest level, the athletes need access to proper facilities, advanced equipment, and specialized assistance from experts in various fields. Additionally, he noted the necessity for an improved medical support system to ensure the athletes’ well-being.
In his comments, Elder emphasized the potential to unearth new talent by reaching out to various provinces. The Fiji National Sports Commission has been supportive, facilitating outreach programs that have led to the recruitment of promising athletes.
Looking ahead, Elder is optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s prospects for the Commonwealth Games in 2026. Preparations are already underway, with efforts to identify potential medal contenders. He acknowledged that, alongside talent development, expanding participation in the sport is crucial, and better financial backing could significantly help achieve these goals.
At the awards ceremony, Taniela Rainibogi earned the title of FSC 2023 Sportsman of the Year, while Miriama Taletawa was recognized as the Sportswoman of the Year. Nehemiah Elder was awarded Young Male Athlete of the Year, showcasing the bright future ahead for Weightlifting Fiji.
This success story reflects the resilience and determination of the athletes and coaches, and it serves as an inspiration for the future of sports in Fiji. With continued support and investment, the potential for growth within the sport looks promising.
