Weightlifting Fiji has celebrated a remarkable achievement by winning three prestigious awards at the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) 2023 sports awards, marking a standout moment for the organization this year. National coach Henry Elder expressed his pride in the athletes’ dedication and performance, especially highlighting their medal success at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship.
Elder acknowledged the vital role government support plays in enabling their achievements, emphasizing that financial backing is crucial for the federation to compete at elite levels. He pointed out the need for improved facilities, advanced equipment, and specialized assistance for both athletes and coaches to enhance their training and competitive performance.
Expanding the sport’s reach is also a priority. Elder noted the importance of scouting talent across various provinces and commended the Fiji National Sports Commission for facilitating outreach programs that have allowed them to recruit promising athletes. With an eye on future success, Elder is optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s prospects at the Commonwealth Games scheduled for 2026, stating that preparations are already underway, including the identification of potential medal contenders.
On a celebratory note, Taniela Rainibogi was honored as the FSC 2023 Sportsman of the Year, while Miriama Taletawa received the Sportswoman of the Year award and Nehemiah Elder was recognized as the Young Male Athlete of the Year.
As Weightlifting Fiji moves forward, the commitment to nurturing talent and securing necessary resources suggests a bright future for the sport, hopefully leading to even greater successes on international stages.
This journey reflects not just the dedication of the athletes but also the unwavering support from the community and government, creating a promising outlook for the sport in Fiji.
