Weightlifting Fiji emerged as a major highlight at the 2023 Fiji Sports Awards, which took place at the Vodafone Arena last night. For the first time, the organization achieved a remarkable double victory by claiming both the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards.

Taniela Rainibogi earned the Sportsman of the Year Award due to his exceptional performances at the Commonwealth Games and the Oceania Championships. Notably, he became the first male lifter from Fiji in 70 years to secure a silver medal at the world level. His accolades include three gold medals at the Pacific Games, a gold at the Commonwealth Championships, and a silver at a World Grand Prix. Furthermore, Rainibogi set three Oceania and three Commonwealth records, ultimately being named the athlete of the Pacific Games.

On the women’s side, 19-year-old Miriama Taletawa was honored with the Sportswoman of the Year Award after winning a bronze at the Commonwealth Championships and two silvers at the Oceania Championships held in Samoa last year.

In other awards, former Flying Fijians coach Simon Raiwalui was recognized as Coach of the Year, having led the team to the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals last year. Additionally, the Flying Fijians were awarded the 2023 Team of the Year, while Netball Fiji was celebrated as the 2023 Sports Organization of the Year.
