Weightlifting Fiji has begun its preparations for what is expected to be an exciting and competitive year in 2025. The initial trials took place at Rabuka Gym over the weekend of December 28, marking a significant first step for athletes as they gear up for major events this year, including the Pacific Mini Games in Palau, the World Youth and Junior Championships in Lima, Peru, and the U23 Championships in Melbourne, Australia.

National coach Henry Elder expressed his contentment with the trial outcomes, stating, “We are very happy with how everyone performed over the weekend. The results were positive, and we are excited to continue building from here.” Following the trials, athletes engaged in light training sessions on Monday, and despite a brief break when the gym closed, regular training will persist throughout the week.

Elder noted that the recent trials were just the beginning, with three more trials planned in the lead-up to key events. The next trial is scheduled for January 19, during which the team will continue refining its preparations. “Our goal is to ensure our athletes are ready for these key competitions, and we’re confident in their potential,” Elder added.

The recent trials, along with ongoing training, showcase Weightlifting Fiji’s dedication to capitalizing on the momentum built in 2024, a year marked by record-breaking performances and historic accomplishments at the Fiji Sports Awards. Elder promised to share the results of the trials with the public soon, as the team focuses on honing their strategies for the upcoming competitions.

This proactive approach not only sets the stage for future successes but also fosters a spirit of perseverance and hope among athletes and supporters alike. With strong commitment and hard work, Weightlifting Fiji aims to make a significant impact on the international stage in 2025.
