Weightlifting Fiji has officially commenced its preparations for an exciting year ahead, having held trials at Rabuka Gym last weekend. These trials, conducted on December 28, 2024, mark a pivotal step in the team’s run-up to several major competitions, including the Pacific Mini Games in Palau, the World Youth and Juniors Championship in Lima, Peru, and the U23 Championships in Melbourne, Australia.
National coach Henry Elder shared his enthusiasm regarding the athletes’ performances during the trials. “We are very happy with how everyone performed over the weekend,” Elder stated. He noted that the outcomes were promising and expressed excitement for further development as the athletes continue their training.
Following the trials, the athletes engaged in light training sessions on Monday, indicating a quick return to preparation after the event. Elder confirmed that, although there was a brief closure of the gym, training would resume steadily throughout the week. He highlighted that these trials are just the first of four planned for this year, with the next trial scheduled for January 19.
Elder emphasized that Weightlifting Fiji is targeting success across various international events this year, highlighting the strong foundation already laid in 2024, which was marked by record-breaking performances and triumphs at the Fiji Sports Awards. He expressed confidence in the athletes’ potential to excel.
Results from the initial trials will soon be shared with the public as the team focuses on refining their strategies for the competitions ahead.
