Weightlifting Fiji celebrated a significant achievement this year by winning three prestigious awards at the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) 2023 Sports Awards. National coach Henry Elder expressed his pride in the athletes’ dedication and performance during a recent interview, particularly in light of their impressive medal count at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship.

Elder acknowledged the crucial support from the government, which has played a vital role in enabling the athletes’ success. However, he also highlighted financial challenges that the federation frequently faces, stressing the need for enhanced funding to provide athletes with optimal training conditions, including top-notch facilities and equipment, as well as specialist coaching.

Additionally, Elder mentioned the importance of developing a robust medical support system for the athletes. He expressed a strong desire to reach out to various provinces to identify and nurture hidden talent, emphasizing the positive collaboration with the Fiji National Sports Commission, which has facilitated outreach programs to recruit new athletes.

Looking ahead, Elder is optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s prospects in the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games, as preparations and athlete selections for potential medal finishes are already underway. He reiterated the necessity for greater participation in the sport and the importance of securing better financial backing to realize their goals.

Notable recognitions at the FSC Awards included Taniela Rainibogi, who was named Sportsman of the Year, Miriama Taletawa as Sportswoman of the Year, and Nehemiah Elder as Young Male Athlete of the Year.

This achievement not only underscores the dedication of Weightlifting Fiji but also sheds light on the promising future of the sport as it continues to develop talent across the nation. With the right support and infrastructure in place, the federation can aspire to greater successes on the international stage.
