Work on a $7.67 million water supply line project for residents of Lautoka and Nadi is nearing completion, with 99% of the project already finished. This weekend marks the final stages of connecting the main water systems under the Nagado to Nadele Trunk Mains Upgrading Project. As part of the process, residents can expect water supply disruptions in several residential and business areas, spanning from Nadi to the Fiji Marriott Resort in Momi Bay and neighboring communities. This is necessary to allow engineers from the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) to perform essential cut-in and connection activities on the DN 600 trunk main at Nadele Junction, close to the Nagado Water Treatment Plant in Sabeto.
The WAF detailed that these works will integrate the newly constructed DN 914 and DN 600 trunk mains and represent the second phase of integrating the DN 914 Mild Steel Concrete Lined (MSCL) pipeline, a significant component of the project meant to strengthen water supply to the areas of Nadi and Lautoka. The DN 914 pipeline, a 1.48-kilometre stretch, was built at a cost of $7.67 million funded by the Fijian Government and is crucial for enhancing water supply capacity and network resilience upon its full commission later in the year.
The work is scheduled to happen between 6 PM on Saturday and 6 AM on Sunday. During this time, WAF advises all affected residents to store ample water to meet their needs for two to three days during the temporary disruption. Households are encouraged to consider investing in water storage solutions, like connected tanks, to better handle both planned and unexpected shutdowns. Additionally, WAF will deploy water carting trucks to assist communities that may face urgent needs during this period.
Similar previous maintenance activities across Fiji, particularly in the Suva-Nausori corridor, have also required such disruptions due to essential projects aiming to improve infrastructure and capacity. As in past instances, the common advisory remains to prepare adequately by storing sufficient water before the outage and remain informed through official WAF updates.
This substantial upgrade reflects a continued commitment by the Water Authority of Fiji to enhance the reliability and efficiency of the water supply network, ensuring that residents and businesses can enjoy improved water services moving forward.
