PADDLERS in Fiji are brimming with enthusiasm as they prepare for the Paddle for Cancer event today, following a day of excitement aboard the South Seas Cruises vessel to Castaway Island. The highly anticipated 36-kilometre ocean paddle will take competitors from Castaway Island Resort to Aquarius on the Beach in Wailoaloa, with teams from the Nadi Bay Canoe Club (NBCC), Castaway Island Resort, Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, and Six Senses Fiji joining forces to support the fight against cancer.
Ashneel Chand, Director of Human Resources at Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort and vice-chairman of the Paddle for Cancer Games Committee, expressed that today’s event embodies the culmination of months of dedication, training, and teamwork. “This event is not just about paddling; it’s about purpose, unity, and hope,” he stated, highlighting the significance of the gathering.
Now in its second year, Paddle for Cancer continues to grow, inspired by the legacy of Christian Pesamino, a former paddler who succumbed to leukaemia at a young age. His memory is honored through the Christian Pesamino Leukaemia Foundation, which offers crucial support to individuals and families affected by cancer in Fiji.
Throughout the past week, paddlers have engaged in intensive preparations, from early morning practices to cross-resort training sessions, while volunteers and sponsors worked hard behind the scenes to ensure the event’s success. Each stroke in the paddle symbolizes hope, remembrance, and unity, transforming the ocean into more than just a course but a testament to resilience and love.
The Paddle for Cancer Executive Committee has expressed deep gratitude to all sponsors, resort partners, and volunteers contributing to this meaningful cause. This event serves as a poignant reminder of how collective efforts can create significant change in the community and support those facing cancer.
As paddlers take to the waters, the spirit of togetherness and the fight against cancer remain at the forefront of this commendable initiative, fostering a sense of unity and purpose among all participants. The community’s commitment is a powerful testament to hope and the ongoing struggle against cancer in Fiji.
