Hundreds of residents in the Suva area are facing water disruptions following a mechanical failure at the Savura raw water pump station. The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) reported that one of the three pumps at the station has malfunctioned, adversely affecting the inflow of raw water to the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant and consequently lowering production levels and reservoir supplies.
Residents in elevated regions, particularly those within the Tamavua system, may experience reduced water pressure or intermittent supply throughout the day. The affected areas include:
– **Tamavua Reservoir**: Places like Namadi Heights, Princes Road, Rewa Street, and elevated areas in Lami.
– **Nagatugatu Reservoir**: Areas such as Wrong Turn, Sakoca, and Tacirua Heights.
– **Tacirua Reservoir**: Including neighborhoods like Tamavua Koro and Upper Ragg Avenue.
– **Dokanaiusuva Reservoir**: All customers serviced from this reservoir will experience a complete lack of water supply.
WAF has dispatched technical teams to address the issue urgently and anticipates completing repairs by 5 PM today. Upon resolution, their focus will shift to enhancing production and replenishing reservoir levels to restore normal service.
To assist those affected, WAF is providing water carting services, ensuring that essential water needs are met during this interruption.
The current situation mirrors earlier disruptions caused by heavy rainfall associated with Tropical Cyclone Rae, which had led to increased turbidity levels in the water supply. In that instance, WAF had to reduce the raw water inflow to maintain water quality standards, which created challenges in managing the treatment capacity effectively.
As we navigate through these challenges, it is vital for residents to prepare by storing sufficient water for their essential needs and limiting non-essential usage. This situation accentuates the importance of community cooperation in face of environmental challenges, ensuring that public health is safeguarded during such disruptions. WAF remains dedicated to resolving these issues and restoring dependable water service for all residents.
