Two significant development projects in Korovatu, situated near Labasa, are currently stalled due to a lack of water supply. The water pipeline extends only to Vunika, leaving the Korovatu area without sufficient water connections. One of the projects on hold involves a $5 million resort development led by businessman Ma Xian Lin. He has expressed frustration over the delays, stating, “My land has no water,” and is urging the government to extend water supply to the region.

Ma Xian Lin highlighted that approximately 100 families in Korovatu are also affected by the water scarcity, emphasizing the community’s need for proper infrastructure. He attempted to drill a borehole last year, but it was unsuccessful due to insufficient depth. Despite his plans to begin construction next week, the absence of water remains a critical obstacle. Additionally, he is facing complications with his land title application, which has been pending for two years.

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has acknowledged these concerns and committed to addressing the issue with the relevant stakeholders and ministries to facilitate progress.

This situation highlights the interconnectedness of community development and essential services. The government’s response will play a crucial role in enabling these projects, which are vital for both local economic growth and improved living standards for residents. With the right support, the potential for positive changes in Korovatu could not only enhance the area’s appeal as a tourism destination but also uplift the quality of life for its residents.
