Residents along the Nausori and Vuci Road corridor have been dealing with significant water supply disruptions for the past three days, impacting their daily routines and the readiness of children for school.
Locals expressed their frustrations to Fiji One News, highlighting the challenges the water cuts have caused. Avisai Voravora, the Village Head-Man of Nausori Village, noted the lack of prior notification regarding the water cuts. He remains optimistic, however, that the relevant authorities will resolve the issue promptly, especially with schoolchildren relying on a consistent water supply.
In a similar vein, Kesoni Kevetibau, a former employee of the Water Authority, criticized the absence of notification about the water outages. He reminisced about his time with the Water Authority in 1992 when residents received advisories a week in advance of any water cuts. This foresight allowed families to prepare accordingly, unlike the current situation where families were caught off guard and their children sent home from school.
Kevetibau pointed out that while the current inconvenience is a challenge, it can also serve as a reminder for residents to be prepared for such unexpected events in the future. He emphasized the importance of not being overly reliant on authorities and suggested that families should always have contingency plans for emergencies, be it fires or service interruptions such as water cuts.
Fortunately, efforts are underway to restore the water supply, and residents are hopeful that normal services will resume within the next few days.
This situation underscores the importance of communication from service providers and the value of community preparedness in managing unexpected disruptions.
