Approximately 60 households along Viseisei Back Rd East in Lautoka have been enduring a significant water supply crisis for the past two weeks. Residents, including Vijay Lal, have had to rely on rainwater collected in tanks since there has been no water available from the Water Authority’s reservoir. Mr. Lal expressed his frustration following his visit to the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) office in Lautoka, noting that the response to their plight has been inadequate. He questioned how a single water truck could effectively serve more than 60 households, emphasizing the dire need for a more substantial water supply solution.
The issue has also disrupted the education of local students, with many unable to attend classes due to the ongoing water shortage. Some residents on Viseisei Back Rd West are receiving an adequate supply of water, highlighting a discrepancy in service that has left many feeling abandoned.
Peni Shute, the acting manager for communications and stakeholder engagement at WAF, acknowledged the challenges faced by residents and confirmed that the authority is actively working on resolving the supply issues. Water carting relief is being implemented to assist those affected, but the persistent shortages underscore an ongoing challenge for the water infrastructure in the region.
This situation resonates with other reports of water supply problems across Fiji, particularly in areas like Nausori and Lami, where over 300,000 residents have been dealing with inconsistent water service due to heavy rains and flooding disrupting local systems. WAF has been trying to communicate the reasons behind the ongoing interruptions, emphasizing that the challenges are largely dependent on environmental factors.
Amid these challenges, there is a sense of hope that improvements in the water supply system will be realized through collaborative efforts among community leaders, government agencies, and residents. The resilience shown by the community during these difficult times is commendable and essential for fostering a more reliable water supply in the future. Continued advocacy for infrastructure upgrades and improved service delivery will be crucial in addressing the needs of those affected.
