Water Woes No More: Kumi Villagers Celebrate New Tanks and Hope

The challenge of accessing clean drinking water during dry spells has been significantly alleviated for the villagers of Kumi in Tailevu, thanks to the provision of 11 water tanks from the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development. Minister Sakiasi Ditoka presented these tanks to ensure a consistent water supply throughout the year, particularly during dry seasons when local water sources tend to dry up.

“The problem here is when dry seasons happen, the water sources they rely on always dry up, and it makes things difficult for them. The water supply from Viria and Namao still hasn’t reached this area, hence why we agreed to do this,” Minister Ditoka stated, highlighting the urgent need for reliable water access in the region.

In addition to the water tanks, the village received two chainsaws intended to assist with timber processing for housing and disaster response. With these resources, the community plans to construct 15 new homes, addressing both housing and water accessibility issues.

This $25,966 project was funded by the Commissioner Central Office through the Self-Help and HRW Programs for the financial year 2024-2025. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to improve living conditions in rural Fiji, where access to clean water remains a critical concern.

The villagers of Kumi, like those in nearby Delaikuku, are seeing the benefits of collaborative community efforts to improve essential services. In Delaikuku, for example, residents have successfully worked together to enhance their water supply through fundraising events and local support, demonstrating the power of unity in addressing shared challenges.

As these projects unfold, they inspire hope for a brighter future, showcasing how government support and community collaboration can lead to substantial improvements in the quality of life for rural populations. Efforts to enhance water access not only benefit public health but foster community resilience and development, paving the way for sustainable growth in these regions.
