In a recent consultation led by the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF), government ministries convened to discuss strategic Master Plans for the Lami–Naboro Corridor and the Nausori–Nasinu area. WAF Board Director Ratu Savenaca Seniloli underscored the significance of collaborative efforts, asserting that partnerships are critical for the successful execution of these plans.

Seniloli pointed out the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to tackle the rapid urbanization challenges facing the Greater Suva Urban Area. He emphasized that current centralized wastewater infrastructure is nearing its limits, affecting capacity and environmental safety. This project aligns with Fiji’s Water Sector Strategy 2050, the Fiji National Development Plan 2025–2029, and Vision 2050, aiming for universal access to efficient and climate-resilient water and sanitation services.

Key numbers highlight the scope of the challenge: only 17% of Fijians currently have access to modern wastewater services, a crucial gap that these Master Plans intend to bridge. This initiative aims to implement a decentralized and resilient wastewater management system, catering to long-term urban needs while prioritizing environmental preservation.

The consultation aims to address ongoing water supply issues plaguing the Suva-Nausori corridor, where significant water disruptions have been reported recently. Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, previously emphasized the government’s commitment to not only immediate repairs but also long-term infrastructure improvements, reinforcing a proactive strategy to enhance water supply reliability.

Efforts also include the construction of new treatment facilities, which will increase overall capacity and aim to significantly reduce water losses that are currently estimated at nearly 47% due to leaks and inefficiencies. The government anticipates that such upgrades will provide a brighter outlook for all residents in these regions, ensuring access to clean water amid growing demands.

This collaborative approach and ongoing infrastructure developments reflect a dedicated effort to secure a sustainable water supply for Fiji, instilling hope for long-term improvements in the lives of those in urban and surrounding communities.
