Police are urging parents to educate their children about the dangers of splashing water on moving vehicles, emphasizing that this behavior is illegal. This awareness campaign follows complaints from numerous motorists since the New Year, highlighting a rising concern for public safety.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, has noted the circulation of a video on social media showing a bus driver as a recent victim of such reckless actions. Driu warned that these acts can lead to severe accidents, resulting in injuries or even fatalities. “Celebrate responsibly and avoid throwing water on moving vehicles,” he advised.
Driu explained that individuals engaging in this behavior may face legal consequences under Section 15 of the Minor Offences Act 1971 or Section 269 of the Crimes Act 2009, with the severity of the charge potentially escalating to murder depending on the injuries inflicted on victims.
He stressed the importance of parental guidance, as children may not fully grasp the potential repercussions of their actions. In addition, he encouraged community members to intervene and speak to young people engaging in these activities. “Police officers are monitoring these incidents, and it’s crucial we look out for one another to ensure everyone’s safety,” he concluded.
This initiative by the police serves as a reminder of the significance of community awareness and responsibility in safeguarding public welfare, especially during festive celebrations. Encouraging dialogue between parents and children can foster a safer environment for everyone.
